Joey Merlino Career
Joey Merlino gained notoriety as the head of the Philadelphia crime family, facing charges related to cocaine distribution, extortion, and illegal gambling.
In 1982, at the age of 20, Merlino was involved in a violent incident at the Lido Restaurant in Atlantic City, leading to his conviction in 1984 for aggravated assault and weapon possession. Subsequently, he was banned from New Jersey casinos. During his incarceration in 1990, Merlino connected with mobster Ralph Natale, plotting to take control of the Philadelphia crime family.
Mob conflicts escalated with shootings and attacks in 1993, eventually leading to Merlino’s arrest in November of the same year for violating supervised release. Following the imprisonment of the family’s leader, John Stanfa, Merlino emerged victorious in the mob war, with Ralph Natale named the new boss.
